Chana dal chaat with tamarind and herbs

Prepare this quick salad using chana dal (crushed young chickpeas). Using raw chana dal creates a wonderful accompaniment to summer barbecues.

Ingredients

  • chana dal400g g

    rinsed and soaked for 2 hours in warm water

  • pomegranate seeds2 large handfuls of
  • cucumber1⁄4

    sliced into small pieces

  • green chili1

    finely chopped

  • red chili powder1⁄4 tsp tsp
  • black salt (kala namak)1⁄2 tsp tsp
  • chaat masala1⁄2 tsp tsp

    (optional)

  • lemon1⁄2

    juiced, plus wedges for serving

  • tamarind chutney2 tbsp tbsp
  • mint leaves6-8

    chopped, plus extra for serving

  • coriander leaves1 tbsp chopped tbsp

    chopped

  • dill1 tbsp finely chopped tbsp

    finely chopped

Step-by-step instructions

    Soak the chana dal in a bowl of warm water for about 2 hours.

    Drain the dal well, then place it in a large bowl with all the remaining ingredients and season well. Mix thoroughly, then chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before serving for best flavor, or eat immediately. Sprinkle with extra mint leaves and serve with lemon wedges for squeezing.
