Follow your bread machine’s instructions before making this simple white loaf, then add flavours like nuts, seeds, cheese, olives or different flours as desired.
Sprinkle ½ tsp salt on the bottom of the bread machine pan, then pour 190 ml warm water, oil and sugar or honey. Add the flour, but do not mix it with the wet ingredients. Make a well in the centre of the flour and add the yeast. (This is important if you use a delayed start function, as the yeast will not activate until mixing begins.) Close the lid.
Set the bread machine to the “basic” or similar bread setting – the program should include kneading, rising and baking and last 3‑4 hours. Make sure to use the “keep warm” or crust‑browning function if your machine has it.
Carefully remove the bread from the pan and place it on a rack to cool completely. Check that the kneading paddle has not remained in the bottom of the pan. The bread can be stored wrapped at room temperature for up to three days.
