Bartolino's Marinara Sauce

This is a recipe from Bartolino's restaurant. It's delicious with the meatballs I have posted, or with pasta alone. Serve over 8 ounces dried pasta, cooked according to package directions.

Ingredients

4 serv.
  • cup chopped onion1⁄2 cup
  • garlic cloves, minced2
  • tablespoon olive oil1 tablespoon
  • (28 ounce) can tomatoes, cut up1
  • cup dry red wine (optional)1⁄4 cup
  • teaspoon salt1⁄4 teaspoon
  • teaspoon cayenne pepper1⁄8 teaspoon
  • teaspoon ground black pepper1⁄8 teaspoon
  • cup snipped fresh basil1⁄2 cup
  • teaspoons sugar2 teaspoons

Step-by-step instructions

    In a medium saucepan, cook onion and garlic in hot oil over medium heat until onion is tender.

    Stir in undrained tomatoes, wine (if you like), salt, cayenne pepper and black pepper.

    Bring to boiling; reduce heat.

    Simmer, uncovered, 25 to 30 minutes or until desired consistency, stirring occasionally.

    Stir in basil and sugar.

    Cover; cook 5 minutes more.

    Serve over pasta.
