These layered bars are so simple! Loaded with homemade caramel and apples. A caramel‑apple layer is hidden between a brown‑sugar crust on both sides.
Crust: Preheat the oven to 350 °F (180 °C). Beat the butter and brown sugar with an electric mixer until creamy. Add cinnamon, salt, baking powder and flour. The mixture should be crumbly. Set aside one cup of the mixture; press the rest into a 9×13 cm pan lined with parchment paper. Bake for 12 minutes.
Filling: Cut the apples into quarters and remove the core/seeds. Slice the apple quarters with a mandoline to obtain extremely thin, almost paper‑thin slices (or slice by hand as thinly as possible). Melt butter in a saucepan. Add both sugars; when the sugar dissolves and the mixture almost starts to boil, add the cream and stir until a creamy sauce forms. It should coat the back of a spoon.
Assembly: When the crust is ready, evenly spread the apple slices over the crust and pour the caramel over them. Sprinkle the remaining crust crumbs from step 1. Sprinkle turbinate sugar for shine and crunch. Bake for 30‑35 minutes. Remove from the oven, lift out of the pan using the parchment paper edges, and let cool 10‑15 minutes. Slice and serve.
