Simple Elderflower Liqueur

Harvest elderflower blossoms for a homemade liqueur – choose creamy‑white blooms away from pollution. Best enjoyed fresh, make it your favorite summer drink.

Ingredients

750 serv.
  • elderflower blossoms8-10 heads of heads
  • golden or white caster sugar100g g
  • lemon1

zest removed with a peeler, ½ of the juice

  • vodka750ml ml

    (keeping the bottle)

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

Trim the long green stems of the elderflower blossoms, leaving enough to keep the heads together. Gently rinse the heads with water and check for insects.

  2. 2

Place the blossoms into an empty vodka bottle or jar, add the sugar and let sit for 1 hour.

  3. 3

Add the zest and lemon juice to the bottle, filling it completely without any air space, leaving extra vodka for later addition. Seal the bottle and let sit for 48 hours. It can be left longer, but the flavor will change – it won’t necessarily become more elderflower.

  4. 4

Strain the vodka into a large bowl through a fine sieve (optionally use cheesecloth or a coffee filter). Add the remaining vodka, then pour into clean, sterilized bottles. It will keep for up to one month.
