Chocolate orange bars

Use dark chocolate and orange to make these wonderful bars. Bake them on weekends as an afternoon treat with coffee, or as a snack in a lunchbox for the week ahead.

Ingredients

  • oats200g g

    or coarse oats

  • unsalted butter120g g

    melted and cooled

  • orange1

    zest and juice

  • dark chocolate100g g

    coarsely chopped

  • brown sugar80g g
  • golden syrup100ml ml

Step-by-step instructions

    Preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C with convection/gas 6 and line a 25 × 18 cm pan with parchment paper. Place the oats in a bowl with a pinch of salt.

    Carefully melt the butter in a small saucepan together with the sugar and syrup. After melting, remove from heat and let cool slightly (a few minutes). Grate the orange zest into the saucepan and squeeze the juice. Pour the mixture into the oats and mix thoroughly until combined, then add three quarters of the chopped chocolate.

    Pour the entire mixture into the pan and press it with the back of a spoon. Press the remaining chocolate into the pan, then bake for 15–20 minutes until golden. Cut into squares and remove from the pan. Let cool completely on a rack before serving.
