Make these fun ornaments for your Christmas tree. Although the ornaments are not edible, they look like real gingerbread and have a wonderful cinnamon aroma.

Ingredients

16 serv.
  • plain flour250g g

    plus extra for dusting

  • ground cinnamon15g g
  • kitchen salt125g g
  • brown poster paint and white fluffy paint
  • brushes
  • ribbon

    for hanging

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

Preheat the oven to 50 °C or the lowest setting. Line a baking tray with parchment paper. In a large bowl combine the flour, cinnamon and salt, then add 125 ml of water and mix until the mixture forms a ball. (If needed, you can bring the dough together by hand.)

  2. 2

Transfer the dough onto a flour‑dusted work surface and divide it into four pieces. Roll each ball out to a thickness of about ½ cm, then use cookie cutters to cut out as many festive shapes as possible (about 16 pieces). In the top part of each shape cut a hole using a straw or a toothpick (later you can pierce them with a ribbon for hanging).

  3. 3

Arrange the shapes on a baking tray and bake for 3 hours, or until they become completely hard. Optionally you can cook them in an air fryer set to 50 °C for 2 hours. Let them cool completely, then paint with brown paint. Let dry, then decorate with white fluffy paint. After fully drying, pierce with a ribbon and hang on the tree. The decorations are not edible, but they can be used for many years.
