You won't find a better traditional apple crumble recipe for a cozy dessert. Soft apple filling topped with a satisfyingly crunchy buttery crumble.

Ingredients

4 serv.
  • Bramley apples575g g

3 medium apples, peeled, cored and sliced 1 cm thick

  • golden caster sugar2 tbsp tbsp
  • plain flour175g g
  • golden caster sugar110g g
  • cold butter110g g
  • rolled oats1 tbsp tbsp
  • Demerara sugar1 tbsp tbsp
  • double cream

clotted cream or custard, for serving

Step-by-step instructions

  1. 1

    Preheat the oven to 190 °C/170 °C fan/gas 5.

  2. 2

Combine the 575 g peeled, cored and sliced Bramley apples with 2 tbsp golden caster sugar and place in a round baking dish 23 cm in diameter and at least 5 cm deep, or a square dish 20 cm. Smooth with a hand to prevent the crumble from sinking.

  3. 3

Put 175 g all‑purpose flour and 110 g golden caster sugar into a bowl, add a pinch of salt.

  4. 4

Add the 110 g cold butter, cubed, and rub it with your fingertips until the mixture resembles wet crumbs. Shake the bowl – larger pieces will rise to the surface, also rub them in. Alternatively, quickly pulse in a processor to a sandy consistency (do not over‑process).

  5. 5

Pour the crumble mixture over the apples, forming a mound in the centre, then use a fork to level it.

  6. 6

Gently press the surface with the back of a fork so the crumble holds together and becomes crisp, then lightly run the fork over the top layer for a decorative effect.

  7. 7

If desired, sprinkle evenly 1 tbsp rolled oats and 1 tbsp Demerara sugar.

  8. 8

Place on a tray and bake in the preheated oven for 35‑40 minutes, until the top is golden and the apples are very soft when pierced with a small sharp knife. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.
