Vitamins & minerals
Pilchards are a good source of Vitamin D, Vitamin B12, Selenium, and Omega-3 fatty acids. They also contain Vitamin A, Vitamin E, and various B vitamins (B1, B2, B3, B6).
How to choose
When selecting pilchards, look for cans that are not dented, swollen, or rusty. Check the expiration date. Pilchards in olive oil generally have a richer flavor, while those in tomato sauce offer a different taste profile. Consider the size of the fish – smaller pilchards tend to be more tender and have fewer bones. Look for pilchards caught from sustainable sources if possible.
How to store
Unopened cans of pilchards can be stored in a cool, dry place for up to 2-3 years. Once opened, transfer any unused pilchards to an airtight container and refrigerate immediately. Consume within 2-3 days. Do not store opened pilchards in the can.
